During this decade, the faces got rounder. In about 1930, the dolls' hair color changed to red. These were probably not licensed dolls, as they are unmarked. During this time, they had seed-shaped lashes.īetween 19, versions of Raggedy Ann and Andy with a single lower lash appeared. By 1920, the dolls looked more professionally made. They had thick cardboard hearts inside their chests. ![]() The first mass-produced dolls continued in the same style, with a deliberately handmade look. These dolls are unmarked and are extremely rare. It is believed they had real candy hearts inside their chests. Most were dressed in brown calico prints. The earliest Raggedy Ann dolls made by the Gruelle family have brown yarn hair, shoe button eyes, and crudely painted or stenciled features. The dolls' designs evolved, but even today, Raggedy Ann resembles the early illustrations, with a smiling face, triangle nose, yarn hair, and striped legs. The Knickerbocker Toy Company produced them from 1963 to 1982. Georgene Novelties held the license from 1938 to 1963. Various companies made the dolls over the years. Eventually, the Gruelle family was successful in getting their trademark reinstated. Several years of legal wrangling followed. Goldman even applied for a trademark on the Raggedy Ann and Andy names. Dollmaker Mollye Goldman began producing Raggedies, unbeknownst to Gruelle. In the 1930s, Gruelle’s original patent expired. As more books were published, additional characters were produced, including Beloved Belindy and the Camel with the Wrinkled Knees. That Christmas, the Gruelles could not keep up with the demand for the dolls, so they agreed with Volland to mass-produce them. Volland published the first book, Raggedy Ann Stories. Over the next few years, the ideas for the stories associated with her were developed. Gruelle family members produced the first Raggedy Ann dolls in Norwalk, Connecticut. However, he applied for a patent on Raggedy Ann several months before Marcella's passing in 1915. ![]() One of the most often repeated is that the death of Gruelle's young daughter, Marcella, spurred the creation of the doll. Many legends surround the origin of the Raggedy Ann character. In the early 1900s, he found an old, handmade rag doll in the family attic and was inspired by it. Gruelle was born in 1880 in Illinois and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. Raggedy Ann was the creation of author and illustrator Johnny Gruelle. If you want to programme 8 bars of drums, then you must switch on your beats for two blocks in the Song Editor (or three blocks, if you programme 12 bars, or four if you programme 16, and so on). Remember the relationship between the Song Editor and the Beat Editor: if you switch the beat sequence ON for one bar in the Song Editor, then only four bars of your sequence will play. You can sequence the default four bars of four beats, or you can add more bars if you want to sequence longer sections. You're free to sequence during playback, so if you're the type of programmer who likes to hear the changes you're making as you make them, just press play and programme on the fly. Invest today, and it will last you a lifetime of maintenance, servicing, restoration. Whether you’re replacing the battery, changing a lightbulb or stripping down the engine, a decent socket set is essential.Ī Halfords socket set is a friend that will repay you many times over. Made from hard-wearing steel, socket sets are put to work whenever you need to work on your car. They contain a variety of ratchets and sockets that are used to tighten or loosen bolts safely. There was more mention of food & drink before I left, so I’m going back tomorrow to show him how to install the brake pads.Socket sets are a mechanic’s best friend. …Oh, I also discovered after all of that hand tapping that I can now crush hickory nutshells right-handed using only three fingers! I ate freshly made “Pigs in a Blanket” out on the back deck under a beautiful autumn sun surrounded by colorful hills & the smell of fallen leaves. What he lacks in mechanical prowess, my pal makes up for in cooking ability. I then had to patiently, methodically & arduously chase new threads into the caliper body using a hand tap & lots of cutting oil. I carefully continued drilling out the remainder of the M10x1.5x25 bolt & knocked out what collapsed threads I could. Who knows whenever the caliper bolts were last removed & what torque was used to reinstall them. ![]() To his son’s credit, that bolt was frozen, as if cold-fused in place. Once the extractor bedded in, it and the bolt went nowhere. With a hint of smug confidence I said, “Watch this!” I then inserted one of my handy-dandy Irwin bolt extractors into the hole & started to give it the business with a long ½” drive breaker bar. I then began center-drilling the bolt with a titanium-nitride coated step drill & cutting oil. I center punched the sheared bolt with a drift point. I firmly clamped the caliper to the plywood with C-clamps. ![]() I created a work surface by placing a thick piece of plywood over the rear tire which was lying flat under the tire well. The BMW was parked in his driveway with the rear end up on short jack stands. A further concentrated effort using the same technique resulted in the broken bolt & a huge argument in which the son stormed off into the sunset vowing to never help with the car again. Using an undersized ratchet, a tremendous effort (which included striking a cheater bar with a maul) managed to loosen one bolt. The passenger side caliper bolts proved extremely difficult for him to remove. His budding weight-lifting shade-tree mechanic son, who I affectionately refer to as Roid Hammerhand, had been in the early stages of replacing the rear brake pads for his father. What was left of the bolt was still firmly threaded within the caliper body. My BMW pal (who almost unjustifiably owns a 740il) requested my advice on what could be done regarding a rear brake caliper mounting bolt which had its head snapped off. I had a run in with a similar situation yesterday. The multi-spline extractor indeed provided an “easy” solution to a potentially huge problem & all the coinciding aggravation attached to it & passed on to others. ![]() Slowly turning the ratchet, the extractor splines firmly dug into the hex socket, broke the torque tension and reversed the setscrew out easily. This extractor was fit into a 13mm socket on a ratchet. I selected an extractor which bedded into the setscrew hex socket. Any further attempts would only succeed in further rounding out the hex socket flats, leaving me furiously SOL (sh*t outta luck). The possibly over-torqued setscrew defiantly resisted the removal attempts of standard hex keys. I believe this setscrew may have been “set” by someone else in the past, because the hex socket corners appeared ever-so-slightly rounded. Naturally, the setscrew is located in a supreme PITA location. I had to remove a 5mm hex socket setscrew in order to proceed on an important 500E project (subject of a future write-up). The best part about using this particular item is that no precision left-hand drilling & further precaution is required as the more commonly known version of “Easy-out” requires. This tool excels in removing buggered-up socket head (Allen) setcrews especially when the setscrew is located in a confined location. The multi-spline extractor is a different version of what is commonly called an “ Easy-out”. Here’s a tool set worth every penny especially when it comes to removing buggered up fasteners. ![]() I was impressed right away with the totally branded interior. Established in 1974 by John Hess, Chuck Kleinhans, and Julia Lesage, it takes its name from the jump cut, a film editing technique in which an abrupt visual change occurs. No worries, we will walk you through the process and take care of all the details. We work with the best talent in the industry to achieve the highest quality product. If it’s a long shot then select the right track for the available footage, try to give an appropriate jump to narrate the entire story. We take great care when creating the images that go into your program. With the intention of achieving a good jump cut on the editing table, it comes with pre-planning, how exactly does one want their content to be delivered. Jump-cut is used as it provides pace in sequence, using it rapidly also grabs audiences’ attention, sometimes using jump cuts gives a new style of presenting the scene, sudden happening of any event, it intrigues the audience and piques their interest and for that very reason is widely used in horror films. In 1986, French magician and filmmaker Georges Méliès, who is also known as “father of the jump cut, discovered the jump cut by accident when his camera stopped by technical fault but when he rolled camera again then he identified this jump cut as a magic weapon in filmmaking. In French new wave use of log shots and cutting them in between started, even though that breaks the 30-degree rule which was definitely the jump cut but it was giving pace in the sequence and the audience started getting a new flavor of enjoying cinema. Most of the time if the continuity is missing in any context then probably it’s going to be a bad one. There are two aspects of jump cut in Editing, good and bad, it totally depends on the desired outcome if one is getting what their intention is then it’s good otherwise quite obviously it’s bad. ![]() There are two aspects of “Jump” in editing, the first one is the glitch where a cut gives the feeling of some unwanted elements or uncertain activity and the second one is a good one which gives a feel of the happening of an event, jumping forwards in time. Jump cuts tend to draw attention to the constructed nature of the film.Ī Jump cut as the name suggests, shows a jump or jerk in an otherwise smooth flowing visual, the audience will feel a jump in the visuals because of a slight variation in visuals. Jump cuts are considered a violation of classical continuity editing, which aims to give the appearance of continuous time and space in the story-world by de-emphasizing editing, but are sometimes nonetheless used for creative purposes. ![]() This kind of cut abruptly communicates the passing of time as opposed to the more seamless dissolve. The clip below presents, in just forty seconds, a few examples of smash cuts from different movies, as well as streaming sensation Stranger Things. While this makes them great for comedies, a this type of cut is very versatile. A jump cut in film editing is a cut in which a single continuous sequential shot of a subject is broken into two different parts, with one piece of footage being removed in order to render the effect of jumping forwards in time. A smash cut, whether for comedy, horror, or drama, relies on a setup and a punchline each and every time. I’ve had some great mentors, within and without the Fraternity, many of whom I still talk to today. Mentorship is critical! Without mentors, I believe, we move without guidance. How has mentorship helped you get to where you are today? Are there any specific people in your org who have made a significant impact on your life as mentors? Leaders will continue to grow by being a continual learner. During these sessions, I’m asking for feedback, constructive criticism, and input on future plans. When I became President, I asked the previous Presidents if they were willing to meet with me Quarterly. I would tell aspiring leaders to learn from those who served before you. What advice would you give to aspiring leaders within your fraternity/sorority who may aspire to take on roles of leadership within alumni chapters? A strategy that I find most effective is dealing with issues as quickly as possible…”Let’s deal with the elephant in the room.” Whenever there is a sign of disruption, acting quickly allows peace and unity to be restored quickly. ![]() This is my primary job! We all know that a “House divided cannot stand!” The diversity that exists within our Chapter, marital status, age, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, etc., can be a challenge when attempting to galvanize brothers around a program, service project, and/or a party. How do you approach fostering a sense of unity and camaraderie among alumni members, and what strategies have you found effective? Personally, I love communicating with my undergraduate brothers, especially when they need support, advice, and of course, money. Also, when our young brothers need funds for meals, equipment, and other school items, we work hard to give them what they need to be successful. We (Alumni and Collegiate) always strive to serve, and support causes together. Our Collegiate advisors do a great job making sure our undergraduate chapters are moving forward in excellence. My goal, every day, is to exemplify the high ideals of brotherhood, scholarship, and service. I absolutely believe in everything my Fraternity stands for. What made you want to pledge Phi Beta Sigma? To me, this is an epidemic that needs more attention. Young black men are dying from illnesses that are preventable and can be managed by de-stressing, eating better, therapy, physical activity, doctor visits, and etc. But the one initiative that dominates my thoughts is the one focused on the mental and physical health of black men. What specific initiatives is your chapter heading up this year and how do you think they will improve the local community or the broader Black community?Īs you can imagine, we are engaged in several impactful initiatives. After several conversations, I realized that I was the person for the position. The Chapter was looking for someone who could manage change, (changes in technology, organizational dynamics, and the overall environmental shifts that affect Greek Life). The short answer is that there was a need and I wanted to do my part. What motivated you to take on the role of alumni chapter president?
